This freeform display piece has been cut flat on the bottom, allowing the piece to stand on its own nicely. The piece is polished all around for a smooth finish with light pitting to the stone in spots. This aesthetic piece is carved from natural black Moonstone. Moo...nstone is a feldspar mineral. Its name is derived from a visual effect, or sheen, caused by light reflecting internally in the moonstone from layer inclusions of different feldspars. Moonstone is composed of two feldspar species, orthoclase and albite. The two species are intermingled. Then, as the newly formed mineral cools, the intergrowth of orthoclase and albite separates into stacked, alternating layers. When light falls between these thin, flat layers, it scatters in many directions producing the phenomenon called adularescence. The sheen is visible in areas on both sides of the piece, best seen from a low angle, great for display on a high shelf. Piece weighs over 2 1/2 lbs.
