An original manuscript legal document involving a 1799 Vermont lawsuit, dated January 7, 1800, and signed three times by Edward Jewett, Justice of the Peace. Also signed and dated January 3, 1800 by DAVID MATTHEWS, Clerk of the Vermont Supreme Court......DAVID MATTHEWS [1747-1811] played a legendary role in the Battle of Bennington during the Revolutionary War. He was a militia officer under General John Stark, and the mortally wounded Hessian Commander, Colonel Sebastian Baum, ...was taken to the Matthews' house along with his war chest of gold. Baum died at the house, and legend says Matthews became a wealthy man after stealing the Hessian gold.
