This massive display piece is one of the finest Sweet Home petrified oak specimens I've ever seen!It's easy to recognize real petrified oak when you see it - the medullary rays form amazing starburst patterns and this incredible mantel piece has two centers which collide to form an amazing work of natural art. Fossil oak is a very distinctive wood with a highly prized grain that is often one of the first loves of petrified wood collectors all over the world. It's ...a relatively uncommon species in the vast petrified forests around Sweet Home, Oregon where scores of different hardwood and conifer species appear in the well preserved fossil logs. The exterior texture is amazing and must be seen to be appreciated - it's real an incredibly fascinating fossil treasure! The stone is dark and shows the mirror polish and the wood grain off beautifully. This one is a very nice sized specimen that we've polished to a mirror finish, ready to display on your desk, mantle or shelf. We made a very lucky strike several years ago near Sweet Home, Oregon. There are a few pockets of absolutely outstanding petrified wood in the hills and farm fields in that part of the state. The wood that is found there is typically very, very agatized and extremely well detailed. Like other specimens from the Pacific Northwest, it's some of the finest to be found anywhere in the world!! The Sweet Home deposit is particularly famous because of the huge variety of tree species that can be found there. I read an article once that listed over 60 distinct species that had been identified in one location alone! This one is easily identificable as oak, though the pore structure is a bit unusual and I'm not sure which of the several possible varities of oak it is. It's a nearly perfectly preserved specimen and quite striking - a natural work of art that is easy to appreciate whether you are simply a rock lover, art lover or budding paleobotanist! This piece is cut from the end of a short log section that we found on that trip. This represents one of the most solid specimens of this species I've recovered anywhere and I waited quite a while to cut it (the anticipation is half the fun!). I'm quite pleased with the quality and hope you will be too. This is a well preserved , nicely colored, fracture free specimen - they just don't get much better! The detail both internally and externally is very good! The tree rings are tight and well defined, and preserved in a dark charcoal colored agate that really took a nice polish. It has been cut with a diamond saw then sanded and polished to a mirror finish. It took a pretty awesome polish (not all of the Sweet Home material will polish this well) and should make a fine addition to a nice petrified wood collection! This is a choice display sculpture polished to show off all the gemmy detail inside. It took a beautiful polish, it really does look like a mirror! It's another one of those beautiful fossil treasures that some happy Sticks-in-Stones customer is going to flip over! This piece measures about 14 3/8" x 10 3/8" wide across the polished face. It is cut about 2 3/4" thick at the base and weighs about 17 lbs. Another Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary quality stone collectible!
