U.S. Navy Admiral Chester W. Nimitz presents awards on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) moored at Pearl Harbor on 27 May 1942. One of those visible receiving a medal is Doris "Dorie" Miller, an African-American messman who was awarded the Navy Cross for his heroic actions on board the battleship USS West Virginia (BB-48) during the Pearl Harbor attack, which is visible in the background with salvage work going on. The bottom of USS Oklahoma (BB-37) is visib...le in front of West Virginia, the main mast of USS Arizona (BB-39) is beyond her.Date 27 May 1942
