More history on this aircraft in WWII -
The Messerschmitt Me 262, nicknamed Schwalbe (German: "Swallow") in fighter versions, or Sturmvo...gel (German: "Storm Bird") in fighter-bomber versions, was the world's first operational jet-powered fighter aircraft. Design work started before World War II began, but problems with engines, metallurgy and top-level interference kept the aircraft from operational status with the Luftwaffe until mid-1944. The Me 262 was faster and more heavily armed than any Allied fighter, including the British jet-powered Gloster Meteor.[5] One of the most advanced aviation designs in operational use during World War II, [6] the Me 262's roles included light bomber,  reconnaissance and experimental night fighter versions.Me 262 pilots claimed a total of 542 Allied aircraft shot down, [7] although higher claims are sometimes made.[Note 1] The Allies countered its effectiveness in the air by attacking the aircraft on the ground and during takeoff and landing. Strategic materials shortages and design compromises on the Junkers Jumo 004 axial-flow turbojet engines led to reliability problems. Attacks by Allied forces on fuel supplies during the deteriorating late-war situation also reduced the effectiveness of the aircraft as a fighting force. Armament production within Germany was focused on more easily manufactured aircraft.[9] In the end, the Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war as a result of its late introduction and the consequently small numbers put in operational service.
*** See my other auctions for more military aviation related photographs for sale ***  I have begun the process of selling a portion of my own personal collection of aviation related photographs which I have amassed over a period of 30+ years.  Check my auctions regularly as I will be listing as time permits.  The vast majority of these photos are all period original prints, and archival images from the 40's, 50's and 60's era.  All of this material is old and I work to describe and present everything I sell as accurately as possible.  If you have questions as to the exact vintage of a photo, or any other questions about the images you see, then please do ask.  I have a large amount of material to sell and I do anticipate this will take years to market and move into the hands of fellow collectors, but the time has come.  I hope you find something that enhances your collection ~ thanks for bidding!
