Historical Negative CollectionGlass plate negative from the Brown Brothers Photo Archive. Images of the Antarctic Exploration in 1914. Leading the expedition was Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton, a principal figure in the age known as the Heroic Period of Antarctic Exploration, on his ship the "Endurance". The expedition was unsuccessful when the Endurance was crushed by ice and had to be abandoned. Shackleton and his crew survived.
