Historic Photo CollectionPhotos from the Brown Brothers Photo Archive. Important collection of DBW photos of movie scenes from the ground breaking silent film "Birth of a Nation" released in 1915 and starring Lillian Gish and directed by D.W. Griffith. The film was a landmark production in the industry being the first 12 reel movie, first to use an intermission, first to cast 100s of extras and first to use an orchestra to create a score for the movie. The controversial story line of barely concealed racism was widely criticised and it was suggested that the movie could incite racial violence. Indeed, the African American roles were mostly played by white men in black face who portrayed them as unintelligent and violent towards white women. Despite the controversy the film was a commercial success and regrettably was influential in the rebirth of the Clan several years later.Brown Brothers retains the copyright for this image(s).
