ITEM: This is a vintage and original large format production still photograph from the 1936 MGM biographical musical The Great Ziegfeld; suggested by romances and incidents in the life of America's greatest showman, Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. This sumptuous still was taken by Ed Cronenweth and showcases the opulence and glamour present in the film's musical numbers. The original press snipe on verso reads:
A PRETTY GIRL IS LIKE A MELODY..and to prove it Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer built the... most elaborate setting ever conceived for one of the beautiful musical numbers in Hunt Stromberg's production of "The Great Ziegfeld". The setting is a revolving stage weighting 100 tons and consisting of many tableaux illustrating famous melodies. The dance and musical numbers were directed by Seymour Felix, while Robert Z. Leonard directed the dramatic sequences with William Powell, Myrna Loy and Luise Rainer as the stars.
Photograph measures 13" x 10" on a glossy double weight paper stock with the photographer's ink stamp and studio paper caption on verso.

He worked as uncredited still photographer on such films as, "The Gorgeous Hussy, " "The Lady From Shanghai, " and "Ensign Pulver."
He took photographs of Rita Hayworth, Joan Crawford, Glenn Ford, Lucille Ball, William Holden, Robert Stack, Gia Scala, and Cliff Robertson.
He is well-known for his photograhs taken during the filming of "The Lady From Shanghai" including the photos of Hayworth and Orson Welles against a backdrop of mirrors. His photos were also used for publicity for the movie poster and other items for the film as well.
Died June 26, 1990 at age 87 in Los Angeles, California.
