Presenting a Most Lovely Edwardian Era Bradley & Hubbard 6-Panel Slag Glass Cast Spelter Staircase Newel Post Lamp for your auction pleasure. This C.1910 architectural salvage item was recovered from a Victorian mansion in Traveler's Rest, SC before it was torn down. It is all original and has never been professionally rewired.
This... beautiful 1920's era lighting device piece measures 17 1/2" tall X 8 3/8" wide. And t he circular base bottom which contacts the newel post top measures 7 1/4" wide.
This especially lovely shade frame features an openwork gallery at the top of acanthus leaves, tendrils & blossoming flower heads. And the base portion is highlighted with fruiting pomegranate. The top is further adorned with (6) fanciful full bodied dolphins in a style of decoration that was quaintly called "grotesque" at the time. The color of the original metalware patina might best be described as golden bronze in hue. I do not believe the metalware has ever been cleaned with any color changing caustics. The slag panels are colored white & caramel.
All metal portions and all glass panels remain in excellent condition with no damages whatsoever. No breaks are present on any of the filigree portions or any glass panels!
The top-quality lamp weighs a hefty 11 pounds, 9 ounces and remains unmarked and we can not positively ascribe a maker to it. However, the quality of the metal casting is first rate all the way and we believe it to be Bradley & Hubbard.
This lovely shade frame is one of the more attractive of this hexagonal lamp post variety that you'll find. Made of patinated cast spelter, the styling is both Victorian & also of the elegant Art Nouveau sensibility.
Newel lights are rare and beautiful additions to any historic home and bring in a great deal of Art Nouveau charm. If you have a late Victorian house, do not hesitate and wire the stairs to hold a newel post lamp such as this one, it will add both elegance & also a hundredth % point to your home value!
And I am happy to report that this vintage lamp remains in truly excellent condition indeed. There are no real damages to this pretty lamp present at all, other than the minor aging & patina that you see.
The frame is rock solidly constructed and all slag panels remain similarly well preserved, with no cracks or chips present.
The lovely antique slag panels have an entrancing & subtle texturing.
A truly lovely 110 year old lighting device that will provide your own Victorian mansion with elegance & charm for many, many more years to come!
