Taylor ushered in Big-Time Heavyweight Professional wrestling to Winnipeg in 1922.
Taylor was considered to be one of the finest overallwrestlers of his d...ay. From the onset, he was heralded as a star on therise. These high regards may have been what led promoters to sign a boutbetween Taylor and then (NWA) world heavyweight champion, Charley Cutler inWinnipeg in 1914. The match was highly controversial with the refereeawarding the bout to Taylor by disqualification.
In February 1915, Taylor was said to be the CanadianHeavyweight champion and livedin Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He arrived in Lincoln, Nebraska on Monday, February 8, 1915 and was prepared to wrestle any local champions. He claimed recent wins overCharles Cutler and Dr. Roller. Taylor, two years earlier, had been in thissection of thecountry, having been brought in by George Gion, and theLincoln Daily Star (2/9/1915)stated that he wasn't that impressive at that time. He's added more than 20 pounds sincethat time and has become "very scientific." Therewas talk that Taylor might be the manto beat Joe Stecher, and Taylor himself believed it waspossible, expressing hisconfidence to reporters. The Lincoln Sunday Star (4/22/1917) listed Taylor'svictories. He reportedly had beatenOscar Wasem, John Berg, Bob Managoff, Jess Westergaard, JohnGordon, Dr. Roller, Bull Olson, Nick Daviscourt, Jim Londos, Charles Cutler, Allen Eustace and others. It wassaid that he'd only lost two matches in his career, bothwhen he was young - against JoeStecher and Dr. Roller.
