Vintage Olds Super Cornet W/Case, Near Flawless in Excellent Playing Condition
This Vintage Olds Super Cornet is in excellent playing condition and the finish is near flawless. The lacquer looks new and it might be a refinish. If so, whoever did it did a very nice job. The only flaw I could find was a very small blemish near the bottom cap on the first valve, see picture 9. I bought this cornet to play back in 2004 and always took very good care of ...it, it was one of my favorite horns and I'm very sorry to part with it.
There is some confusion in my mind as to how old it is. I had always thought it dated back to the mid 1960s but checking with the online serial number lists show that this horn, serial number 145012 was made in either 1943/1944 or 1954/1955. Certainly the tone ring has Los Angeles embossed into it but I understand that these were used even after the factory moved to Fullerton around 1955. Make up your own mind about the date!
The valves are fast and free with good compression and show little wear, all slides are free and move easily. The spit valves work as they should and the pearl inserts are all there. This horn has been played but not abused. The Olds tone ring is there and looks great.
A Bach 7C cornet mouthpiece is included. I have read that Olds cornets of this vintage took a special mouthpiece but this Bach fits well and I thought it played wonderfully. If you are reading this listing you probably already know about the legendary sound of the Olds Super horns. If not, read up on the internet. My ears thought this cornet lived up to its reputation. It plays as nicely as it looks.
The case is a replacement Bach case that was new at the time I purchased the horn. It still looks new.
The Olds horns were made just down the street from me in Fullerton, CA which is the reason I originally got interested in them. I later found out that Olds had a fine reputation for making quality horns that were sturdy enough to withstand both student & professional use. This Olds Super cornet was one of their professional horns from the period when they made their best quality horns.
I quit playing a decade ago and it is time for my horns to go to someone who will appreciate them. This is one of the last of them to go!
I have purchased items on eBay that came wrapped in paper & tape with no box. This always means the item is crushed, dented or even pierced. I will ship your horn & case packed in a sturdy cardboard box with padding to give it the best chance of reaching you the way it left me.
I made a custom shipping box with heavy duty cardboard reinforcing along with plenty of packing tape to make to it both protective & sturdy. Please unpack it carefully!
