Up for sale is a strange E.F. Payne bamboo fly rod. Unfortunately, I do not know the history or the story behind this one. In my opinion this is more or less of a frankenstein rod and because of that it is being sold for parts or repair. It appears that the female ferrule on the mid-section and the male ferrule on the tip section aren't original. As you can see from the photos, the tip section is about an inch shorter than the butt and mid-section; It is hard to tell if the tip section... was repaired, or if it is just a replacement. The wood reel seat and hardware look to be all original. Please note, the butt cap isn’t 100% in place and it does have a small wiggle. I am guessing all of the wrappings on this rod have been redone. The wrapping right above the cork handle is labeled with an "H.H." (possibly someone’s initials?). The ferrules on this rod need a good cleaning and some wax (they measure 15/64" and 9/64"). This rod is just under 9' long and it weighs 4.7oz. The butt cap reads “E.F. Payne Rod E.F. Payne Rod Co Makers” and “Sold By Abercrombie & Fitch New York”. The bamboo does show normal surface wear, but it still looks nice. I do not know if the cork handle is original or not; it has the same shape as an original Payne rod, but there is a good chance it was redone. Once again, I can’t comment on the history of this rod, etc. I can only describe its current state and what I observe. Overall, a good rod for parts or to rebuild.
