An impressive PAPAL BINDING. Bound in full contemporary red morocco with fabulous elaborate gilt decoration, central armorial motif to both... boards of Pope Clement XII or Pope Benedict (died 1758). Measuring approx. 24.9cm x 18cm x 7cm. Gilt gauffered edges. Housed in a custom made green and red clam shell book box with paper label to spine and loose red cloth wrap. Lacking clasps (with neat patch repairs and gilt decoration where clasps previously attached). Early repairs at head & foot of spine and corners. The original morocco has become rather wrinkled with age, and gilt unevenly worn see photos. Little bumped and unevenly darkened/marked with age. Internally later endpapers. Pencil to front endpapers and ink name stamp to edge of title page (T. Faulconer) and following leaf. Small ink annotation to reverse of title page. First and last small section of leaves have some chips to inner edges (title and last text leaf restuck to inner edges). The first few leaves have two areas of burn fray/chip. Pale damp staining throughout (little more so in places, but mostly marginal) with occasional spots. Thumbed and outer page edges are a little damp chipped/bumped in places (few small sections are a little tatty/frayed to edges). Lacking four leaves (see pagination below). Some light occasional grubbiness/dustiness. Occasional annotation.
Title in red and black and with engraved title illustration. Text throughout in red & black (mostly in double-column). There are three full page engravings. An impressive PAPAL BINDING.
