The Kapton Foil rectangular piece, measuring approximately .75 x .75 inches was flown in space on Apollo 9, March 3-13, 1969, as part of the protectiveinsulation for the first manned Apollo Lunar Module, “Spi...der, ” and wasretrieved by Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart shortly before the LunarModule was jettisoned from the Command Module.
The flown Kapton Foilremnant was cut from a larger, approximately 6-inch piece originating from Rusty's personal collection and consigned by him to Heritage Auction in May 2019 as LOT #50939, which waspurchased by me at that time.Approximately one quarter of this larger piece, or 1.5 x 1.5 inches, was cut into four smaller pieces measuring approximately .75 x .75inches each. This Lot includes piece demarcated as "A" (See image of Letter of Authenticity, which comes with the lot, for additional details).

This is what Rusty had to say about the quotes he carried with him on the Apollo 9 mission for the 2020 Apollospace film, "Rusty Schweickart: Apollo 9 & Beyond": "During Apollo, we had very limited space and weightavailable in the spacecraft. I mean, weight is always a precious thing, as isvolume. But NASA had the foresight of letting all the astronauts bring up asmall thing called a personal preference kit or a pilot's preference kit, whichwas about a couple of pounds and something a fraction of a lunchbox kind ofthing, where you could bring some things that were personal to you. They had tobe packed and vacuum-sealed and couldn't out gas and all those kinds of things. But you could bring some personal things up. And in the early flights, if therewas a little extra weight that we could carry, it wasn't exactly strict. Youknow, there was a couple pounds, could maybe be three pounds or maybe fourpounds or whatever. So, coming up on your flight, you're thinking, well, what Ishould I bring with me? You know, what do I wanna bring? You have all kinds ofpersonal things, and, you know, some jewelry from my wife and some of this, that and the other thing, little mementos. But in addition to that, I tend to be a person interestedin philosophy and intellectual thought and that kind of thing, and I've read —do a lot of reading and a lot of it in philosophical times kinds of things. Andso, I thought to myself, this is a very special time. I'm probably not gonnaget to fly more than once or maybe only a couple times, but maybe only once. So, I wanna take up more than just me and, in fact, I am not just me, but I amthe things that I've read and the things that I've experienced, and so I wantedto take up with me what I — I never have found the right words, but let me say, little samples of the wisdom of humanity, you know, over the years. And whetherthose are fiction authors or famous people like Jack Kennedy or Robert Kennedyor Winston Churchill or whoever or things out of the Bible, whatever it was, wherever — things that I had read that I felt really contained nuggets of humanexperience over the centuries of human development. And so, for six months before the flight on Sundayevenings when I was in Houston at home, my wife went off to choral practice andleft me with the kids. I'd put all the kids to bed, five of them, put the kidsto bed and then I would sit in the living room with a circle of light aroundme, everything else dark, and I had all kinds of books and things that I'dread, and I would be flipping through them to see where I had dog-earedsomething or whatever. Out of that, I picked, I think it was a total of 23paragraphs, sentences to maybe a couple paragraphs at most, of something thatsomething that somebody had said or an author had written or a person hadthought or a poem a poet had written. And I picked, in the end, winnowed that down to 23 smallthings, and I had them printed in gold leaf on parchment. And then I cut themout, and I had many different copies of them made. I don't know how many copiesI made, but a bunch of them, because parchment is pretty thin, I could packthem really tight, and I wanted to have those samples of human experience andwisdom and insight with me when I went up in space and even went outside. And Ifrankly don't even remember whether I had one in my — had a set in my pocketwhen I went out, but I certainly had them in flight with me.And those are very special to me, because that was my wayof honoring the whole evolutionary experience of intellect and consciousnessand evolution here on planet Earth, and so they became a very personal, they'renot the normal kind of memento, but to me, that was my way of acknowledgingthat I was much more than an individual at this moment. We are all made up ofeverything that we've read and the experience of humanity before us, and, ofcourse, we'll pass our own contribution to that on to the next generations."Unfortunately, there are a lot of fakes, forgeries, facsimiles, autopens, and pre-prints flooding the market with too many unscrupulous "dealers" taking advantage of unsuspecting and uninformed collectors.  As the Managing Member and principal owner of Apollospace, LLC I have over 25 years of experience buying, selling, and authenticating astronaut autographs.  With my knowledge, experience, and expertise regarding Apollo era astronaut autographs, the Apollospace® Lifetime Guarantee of Authenticity, and our 100% eBay rating, you can bid with confidence and no risk!  You can return for any reason within 60 days if not satisfied and with no time limit regarding authenticity. I first started selling astronaut autographs and NASA photographs on eBay in 1996.   That was within eBay's first year of operation (when it was still known as "AuctionWeb" and had only tens of thousands of users!).
