You may ask, "Justinleatherette, why are you selling a poster you searched far... and wide to get once you were lucky enough to find it?", and that would be a great question. The answer is simple:
After watching Vincent's divisive rhetoric go from a whimsically cute nostalgia for a bygone era of conservatism, to viciously trashing Black Lives Matter (and social justice as a concept), I could no longer in good faith hang the poster, not after he repeatedly attacks an organization which in its own words, "Seeks to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives".
** For that reason, a portion of this sale will go directly to the Black women-run organization, Black Lives Matter. (a) Because I believe it's a worthy cause which is close to my heart, and (b), because it would probably really irritate Vincent
What portion you may ask? I don't know, this is my first time selling something out of spite. I'm thinking that anything over a winning bid of $300 gets split between the charitable donations. (I would have done them directly, but for some reason eBay doesn't link to them all. Shocker.
And because he also offered offensive and cruel merchandise with the images of (mostly female) public figures from the left who don't share his politics, coupled with his past statements against women, the LGBTQ community, and his crusade against social justice, equity and inclusion, and it became clear I should also donate a portion of the sale of this poster to Time's Up, and GLAAD as well. So a portion of the sale will be split between the 3 causes.**
If you have a problem with my politics but not his, that's ok, you can still buy the poster, and you could even turn around and sell it for a cause that you deem worthy, or simply hang it with pride...the choice is yours. I just wanted to make this known to potential buyers so that you would know where a portion of your money was going, whether that's a plus or a deterrent.
So having dispensed with the fun stuff, here's what I know about the item, cause that's why you're here, right?
I looked forever, and had it saved as a search, and the moment I was notified I swooped it up and put it in storage with the rest of my prized scores. But after many years and little space on the walls (but mainly because...well, Vincent), I'm ready to part with it.
I'm not qualified to date this poster. What I can say is the weight and attention to detail in the glitter application to the lettering is consistent with the originals I saw upon release of the film, as well as my old poster. If someone were to have bought a reproduction and carefully applied the glitter just as Vincent had in 1998, then they not only found an incredible poster, but did the glitter with the same love and care as the originals. I don't know how many were originally circulated, so I have no way of authenticating, and I wasn't about to call Vincent to do so. I can state for sure this was not applied to a wall for promotional purposes upon release of the film, as there is no wheat paste on the back, and it's in near-perfect condition with no tears or heavy wrinkling. So whether or not this is something that came from him, a super fan, or a seller who wanted to pass it off as N.O.S., I have no idea, but it's gorgeous. Also, having seen Gallo sell them on his website in the past, I have no doubt that this very well could have been purchased directly from him, as you can buy virtually anything from his merch store. Anything.
I say all of this in the interest of transparency, and want to be very clear that I don't know the origin of this poster, so I am selling AS IS.
Any additional questions, please feel free to reach out.
Excuse the photos, but it's hard to get the right angle on such a large poster from above. I would prefer not to take more photos, as each time you take it out of the poster tube a little more glitter sheds (such is the case with these old handmade rarities), so if you have questions about the condition, just ask.
Whether you're a Vincent Gallo Stan, a film geek, a movie poster collector, a reseller, a liberal activist, a died-in-the-wool Republican who longs for the days of Richard Nixon, or simply just think it's a stunning example of inventive movie posters (it's among the best in my opinion), this is a real find.
Sales are final, so ask as many questions as possible.
PS - I'd rather not sell this to Vincent. If I wanted to, I'd have emailed him directly. I wouldn't say I "know" him, but I've had several conversations with him over the years, various correspondence, and we share many mutual acquaintances (and in my dealings he's actually been not only pleasant and delightful, but incredibly charming...I once even tried for months to buy a car from him, but I digress. This isn't about my experience, having been a big fan of both his music and the film for which this poster was made - it's about the mean, hate-filled, and hurtful things he says and puts out into the world in a time of great division, suffering, and conflict, (not to mention during a once-in-a-century pandemic when kindness counts). So whether joking, trolling, or actually speaking his heart and mind with passion, it was time to let go of my favorite poster. If for a goof you forward this to him and he tries to buy, if I'm able to, I'll decline the sale. Or better yet, maybe I'll let him buy it and donate more to the aforementioned charities! I like that idea.
Glad we talked this through.
Thanks so much. Hoping you are all safe, healthy, and hanging in there.
Good luck bidding.
And no, the metal animal skull holding it in place is not for sale.
Now for some annoying search terms and key words which won't likely help and honestly bum me out when I see them, but whatever.....
