YZ Nut Bird Vintage Ashtray 6 Inch Horn Or Bone Bill Rare Henry Howell And Co.
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:5860 | Age: 1900-1940 |
Original/Repro: Original |
Possibly dates to the 1920s or 30s. Made by Henry Howell and Co Ltd. Only a small % of these were made for Dunhill so I can't guarantee this one was, still sought after though. Looks like a Woodpecker with that crest to his head although his beak is perhaps slightly too long and the wrong shape for a Woodpecker !!
Has a rare horn or bone long beak , most seem to be phenolic Bakelite type material, glass eyes and phenolic feet in r...ed. Body and head look to be from nut, he sits on a stump of wood, possibly bamboo. The ashtray looks to be some kind of tropical hardwood. These were made in England as per the stamp so a lot of sourcing materials from abroad was used. Interesting to know how many Countries make up this chap.
Measures 6 inches long and just under 4 a cross at its widest, 5 inches tall. His impressive bill is just under 3 inches long.
Condition is good , minor wear from age as expected. Beak has a split or crack at the base which is partial and does not run the entire width, possibly repaired or a natural fault, not sure, looks a bit like his mouth and not too worrying.
Charming piece which I believe to be authentic. Good luck.
