Seiko Classic Black Turtle Ceramic Shark - Mesh Automatic Diver Watch 6309 - 7040
Item History & Price
This auction lot is for a superb Gents Seiko Automatic Scuba Diver's Watch. This model is the oversized 'Turtle' cased 6309-7040, dating originally from October 1979.
In excellent pre-owned condition, with the original Seiko dial refurbished and customised in the classic 6309 layout, a new Chapter Ring, new custom Hands, a new scratch-resistant Mineral C...rystal, a smart new ceramic 'Submariner' style Bezel Insert, and a brand new 'Shark Mesh' steel bracelet. I'll also include a new aftermarket Seiko 'Accordion' rubber Diver's strap at no extra charge.
This classic oversized Scuba Diver's watch has been professionally Serviced and Regulated, and is running beautifully, keeping accurate time.
And a nice added bonus with this one - my watchmaker has completed a full 'Pressure Test' on the watch, and he has confirmed it is water resistant, tested to a pressure of 10 BAR (100 metres).
The oversized dual-finish steel 'Turtle' Case has been expertly polished and rebrushed, and is in excellent condition. The watch also has a 'Quickset' Day & Date window, and a luminous treatment to the hands and markers (and the excellent ceramic bezel insert is luminous too). I'll provide a full Seiko instruction manual (in a downloadable/printable PDF file).
Please read on.
Dial/Hands Original Black Seiko Dial, expertly refurbished and customised back to the classic 6309 layout, with a new black chapter ring, both in perfect condition. The Dial is signed 'SEIKO, AUTOMATIC' above centre, 'WATER 150M RESIST' and the Suwa symbol below centre. Applied circular white markers instead of numbers, applied trapezoid markers at 6 and 9, and an applied stylised sword hilt at 12. There's a 'Quickset' Day/Date window at 3 o'clock - the Day can be set to display in English or as a Roman Numeral. The Day display is Black for Monday through Saturday, a contrasting Red for Sunday. The new chapter ring is in black, with a white minute marker track, and is set at an angle, which adds an impression of extra depth to the Dial.
I've fitted a new custom hands set, in a the classic 6309 style - an arrowhead Minute hand, a broadsword Hour hand, plus a new steel'needle' Seconds hand, with a lumed circle near to the tip. I've used a modern luminous treatment on both the hands and markers, they glow nicely after exposure to light - it won't shine all night, but the effect lasts for a decent spell, which is a nice bonus on a redialled/refurbished watch, which often have no 'lume' at all.
Case The fantastic oversized 'Turtle' dual-finish stainless steel Case is in excellent condition, with minimal signs of use. It's got a terrific satin-brushed finish to the front, with a contrasting high-polish finish to the sides and caseback. I've had this expertly polished and rebrushed, and it has come up beautifully - I'm struggling to see any marks at all, but to cover myself, there may be one or two very light 'hairline' marks on the steel surfaces if examined up close. The case edges remain sharp and nicely defined.
Bezel The bidirectional steel Bezel is in very good condition, and turns smoothly (with a good resistance), with 60 ratcheted 'clicks'. I've fitted a very smart new ceramic Bezel Insert, in the traditional 'Submariner' style, printed with elapsed-time markings with a luminous treatment - again, it won't last all night, but it's quite effective once charged by light.
Caseback The screwdown caseback is in very good condition, again expertly cleaned and lightly polished, with only minor marks. The manufacturer wording on the caseback is starting to fade slightly, but remains legible, and reads as follows: "Seiko, St Steel, 6309-7040, Water Resist, 9O1988, JAPAN, A, 'Suwa' symbol" plus the Seiko Wave logo in the centre.
Crown Original screwdown ridged-edge steel crown, offset at the 4 o'clock position, screws down to lock, and adjusts perfectly, stem is fine. Cleaned and polished, and in very good condition, insignificant tiny marks on the fluted sides.
Crystal New scratch-resistant Mineral Crystal, mint condition, bright and clear.
Movement The original Seiko Japanese 6309A 17 Jewel Automatic movement has been FULLY SERVICED by my watchmaker. He reports it is in excellent condition, with a strong reserve. He's regulated it and it is very accurate. All gaskets have been replaced. The Caseback Serial Number indicates the original date of manufacture as October 1979.
Strap/Bracelet I've fitted a brand new 'Shark Mesh' steel bracelet, complete with a foldover/pushbutton release clasp - it's a nice quality addition, and really suits the watch. As provided, the watch will comfortably fit a wrist size of up to 8.1" (@205mm).
Bonus Strap Fancy changing the look of the watch? As a bonus, I'll include a brand new aftermarket Seiko Z22 ridged 'Accordion' rubber Diver's strap, with a floating keeper, along with a new brushed steel buckle. I'll also supply a pair of 'Fat' Seiko Spring Bars, which are more suited to the larger slot holes on the strap, and provide a more secure fitting - this helps to ensure that the lug holes on the watch don't get worn through excessive movement. Designed to fit over a wetsuit, the strap will comfortably fit a wrist size of up to at least 8.5" (220mm+). I've taken some extra photos of the strap - see the last two pictures.
Running condition Running, and keeping excellent time. As well as the Service, the watch has been regulated, and checked on a professional timing machine. I've also 'bench-tested' the watch, running it twice on an automatic winder, over at least 24 hours each time - it is accurate to better than +/-18 seconds per day max. (anything under 20 seconds a day is excellent for a vintage automatic).
Measurements Width without crown - 43.7mm (47.9mm with Crown), Lug to Lug - 45.3mm, depth 13.3mm. Lug Width 22mm. Weight total (on bracelet) 143 grams.
Other - I love these oversized 'Turtle Case' Diver watches. Appreciably bigger than the standard 6309 and 7002 Diver watches that followed, the 'Turtle' case 6309-7040/7049 versions are the most desirable for enthusiasts, and measure up to all but the largest of today's modern Dive watches. It wears quite proudly on the wrist as it's a shade over 13mm deep, and mounted on the steel Shark Mesh bracelet, it's a hefty 143 grams, and feels solid and substantial, with a terrific wrist presence.
The robust Japanese Seiko 6309A Automatic Movement has been fully Serviced and regulated, and the watch is working beautifully, keeping accurate time.
The refurbished black Dial and new Hands together with the new ceramic 'Submariner' Bezel Insert go together really well, and add to the iconic Scuba Diver's appearance.
Though pre-owned and now nearly 40 years old, this classic watch is in remarkably good condition, with minimal signs of use, and has clearly been maintained well. I've had the dual-finish steel case and caseback expertly repolished and rebrushed - it looks terrific!
I'll send the winning bidder a PDF File with the full instructions, which will show you how to change the Day & Date and maintain the watch etc.

Any questions, please ask - I have described the item as thoroughly and honestly as possible - but I'll try and help if I can! Please Note: The majority of watches I sell are pre-owned, or New, but Old Stock. Whilst I go to every effort to describe the watches accurately, you should be aware that should a watch be marked Water Resistant or Waterproof, that was the case when it left the factory, and is not necessarily the case now. Unless specifically stated, these watches are not fully serviced (though they will have been inspected inside and out). Unless specifically stated, I offer no guarantees as to the current level of Water Resistance. Similarly, though I test all watches for accuracy and describe accordingly, this is no guarantee of future performance. Vintage automatic or hand-winding watches are by definition less accurate than their modern quartz counterparts. When purchasing a vintage watch, especially of high value, I would always advise the buyer to have the item inspected by a qualified jeweller, who should be able to identify any issues that I may have missed, and advise on water resistance, or servicing requirements. Of course, should any issue then come to light, I will do everything possible to assist - as you can see from my 100% Feedback!
