F1059A HP OmniBook 600 600C 600CT 800 800CS 800CT 3.5" Floppy Disk Drive FDD with Cable. Condition is "Used but fully tested".
The Omnibook 600 and 800 series sub-notebook laptop computers both used small external floppy drives like this one to back up, restore, load, or transfer files - 1.44 megabytes at time! (The hard plastic diskettes it used, incidentally, were quite rigid and not floppy at all - go figure..) This external floppy drive connects to the back of the Omnibook (or i...ts docking station) using a proprietary interface. In the '90s, software manufacturers would distribute their products on floppies - sometimes a dozen of them or more! - so every device had to have a floppy drive of some sort. (A few years later, the CD-ROM, with its 650-MB media, would take over this task and consign the floppy drive to history -- and to eBay!!)
The unit for sale here is one of the several versions HP made available for the Omnibook 600 or 800; there are minor cosmetic differences from one version to another. This one is the F1059A model, and it is accompanied by an 8120-6464 data cable (HP also had several compatible cables with different part numbers). I have seen the cable alone selling for $20 or more..
Power is supplied to the device through its data cable.
I have tested this unit with a couple of Omnibook 800CT laptops and a couple of Omnibook 600C laptops and have found no issues.
THIS IS NOT a USB device!!! USB was still several years in the future at this point! You might see a bunch of those "you might also be interested..." eBay ads at the bottom of this listing, most likely trying to sell you a USB-based floppy drive. USB devices will NOT work with your Omnibook 600 or 800, which do not have USB!!!
