These mortar devices, reliable and efficient, were first createdby West Point and M.I.T. graduate David A. Lyle (b. 1845 d. 1937). A similarmodel was used forrescue by shore stations. These guns have a range of 1, 300 ft.
This is a muzzle loading deck mounte...d cannon with a bronzebarrel. The original brass carriage is of the "skid" type. Fitted with a pin stop elevation adjuster, bolted touch hole. SPECIFICS: S/N: 831The barrelis entirely of bronze.Barrel:Length: 29 3/4” overallBore: 2 1/2”Mounted on wood base:31” x 12” x 13”Markings:“F CLB 831 USCG” stamped into bottom of the barrel near firing hole.“C.C. GALBRAITH & SON INC. N.Y. CLB 831B USCG” stamped aroundthe face of the muzzle in an arc“831 CLB USCG” stamped into the top of both left and right sidesof carriage“C.C. GALBRAITH & SON INC. New York, NY U.S.A.” relief-caston both sides of the carriage.CONDITION: Fine.Barrel is a bronze patina with a couple of dings nearmuzzle.I cleaned the barrel today with Brasso, I think you can see the difference between the before and after photos.
