This vintage Chinese qipao cheongsam blue silk embroidered crane birds banner dress dates from the 1940s. It is made of a dark navy blue color silk fabric with colorful finely done raised padded satin stitch hand embroidery work of four white crane birds in flight with a pine tree in the background whi...ch are both symbols of longevity, long life and pink fuchsia flowers wrapped around the bottom branches. Manchu women wore a one-piece dress which were called "qipao" or "banner dress" and later became the traditional dress for Chinese women. This beautiful blue cranes Chinese cheongsam dress has a fitted style, a long below the knee length with side slit vents, a stiffened mandarin collar, short sleeves, decorative pankou knots, snaps, zipper closures along the side and is unlined. The dress measures 45 inches long, with a 36 inch chest, 30 inch waist, 38 inch hips and a 12 inch neck. It is in good condition, with only a tiny faint stain on one of the cranes wing (see close-up). This is truly a wonderful quality custom made piece of Chinese cheongsam wearable art!
