Lovely antique oyster plate by Union Porcelain Works, circa 1881. Unusual all white with copious gilding, clam shaped, in excellent condition. 8 1/2 inches X 6 7/16 inches. This plate features 4 oyster shells nestled amongst seaweed with a beautiful scallop shell for the sauce or lemon. Surrounding are a crab claw and various shells and sea creatures. There is an small white crab, not gilded, crawling on an oyster shell. PLEASE NOTE: the last photo shows a dot on the porcelain th...at is grey and rough--a tiny nick? Union Porcelain Works was the first and most important United States company to make oyster plates. I see this plate referenced on Encyclopedia Smithsonian and the Met Museum websites. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail and additional insurance.Some photos were taken in day, some by lamp light after dusk. The plate is white.
