Be sure to have a look at our other items!This is a beautifully hand carved, absolutely gorgeous, lightly used traditional 8 day cuckoo clockthat was produced about 35 years ago in the Black Forest of what was then, "West Germany" by the "Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company;" you don't get any more original ...than that. Actually, the Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company did more than most to popularize the cuckoo clock since they were very quick to mobilize after WWII and did all they could to get a cuckoo clock into the hands of GI's returning from the war. My father brought one home and I remember it to this day. The clock is beautiful, has been well maintained, and has a stunning blended walnut finish; very nice! This clock is carved from cured and aged Lindenwood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The front of the case looks like an intricately carved wooden grape vine with five, large, deeply carved grape leaves. And there is a large carved wooden bird snuggled into the grape vine atop the clock. The dial has a black background and features raised Roman numerals to mark the hours and a rare pair of matching, very fancy wooden hands to pointout the time. There is a large wooden door at the very back that is secured with a metal latch. The door easilyremoves to allow access to the all metal weight driven movement produced by "Regula." The door has the faint stamp of the "Cuckoo Clock Manufacturing Company" but it is still readable. Aweight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled at least every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. The bellow or whistle tubesare intact and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottomof each hour, a colorful bird opens the small wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. The bird gives offa single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside thecase. When he's through, the bird returns to the safeconfines of the clock, closing the door behind him. At the top of each hour, the bird appears again and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hoursbefore going back inside the clock; fascinating! I'velooked the clock over fairly well and can't find any damage, missing parts, or repairs. The clock shows little signs of use and is absolutely gorgeous on display! The clock works just fine here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. It is most impressive and a great example of old style Black Forest carving. It is the perfect size too measuring about 12 1/2" high (not countingthe weights or pendulum), about 5 1/2" or so at its deepest point, and about 9" or so across the top. Keep in mind, this is an old clock and we don't know the service history though the movement does show signs of maintenance. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We oftenrecommend to our clock customers to have their vintage or antique clocksserviced at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classicclock like this one, healthy for years to come. The clock comes completeas shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is in a class all by itself and is certain to be the focalpoint of any collection. Any guests in your home or office will bemore than pleased to see this rare German timepiece in action.
