First, the specifics:
COSMETICS: Darn good overall.
- Mainly raw brass finish; great clear, crisp engraving.- Aside from 2 minor dents on bell taper by braces, the horn is quite straight and true.- There's a "shadow" or two from a moved brace and nib. (I'll explain below). Some solder traces as well.- GREAT... patina...the horn has "the look."
MECHANICS: Excellent
- Really nice valves with great compression.- 1st and 3rd slide move very well. 2nd slide is fixed in place, and does not pull, similar to a piccolo trumpet. It is not stuck. It is permanently fixed in place. I believe the 1st slide thumb hook may be an addition/modification.
- Main tuning slide has a water key from a Bach Stradivarius.- Leadpipe/receiver is not original....it is a rare Blackburn upgraded leadpipe and receiver.
Onto my possible theories on this horn. These are my best guesses (after consulting with a Martin expert) as to what it could be:
1) Could be an EXTREMELY well-done "conversion" horn from a larger Martin Committee Bb trumpet or cornet. (This could explain the brace and nib shadow from it's previous location)
2) Could be an original Martin Eb horn w/ just the the Blackburn leadpipe modification and Bach water key. There are VERY few Martin Eb horns to compare to, and the one or two pics I have seen are "deluxe" models.
3) Could be a factory or personal customized conversion for a VERY well-known late symphony player, who was associated with the Boston Symphony and University of Michigan. Apparently this individual had a relationship/sponsorship with Martin, and would often have them customized. He also had a relationship with Cliff Blackburn, which may explain the leadpipe. Some of his horns went to a Michigan museum, but not all. It is possible this one one, but it is just speculation, and I cannot confirm nor deny. I really don't know.
With all that being said, I'll let the buyer formulate his opinions, as it really is impossible to say with certainty. What I can say is that is is a fine horn, and quite a good player as well.
