How does acid testing work for genuine silver? There are different grades of silver: - Fine silver 999- Britannia Silver 958- French Silver 950- 91 zolotnik Russian Silver 947- Sterling Silver 925- Canadian Coinage Silver 800- 88 zolotnik Russian Silver 916- Coin Silver 900- 84 zolotnik Russian Silver 875- Scandinavian Silver 830- German Silver 800 or 835- lower grade silver 500All of the above gradings are genuine silver however without a hallmark it is impossible for me to determine silver grading of each piece.Please be warned a positive silver reading does not automatically mean a piece is Sterling silver, Sterling silver is only equivalent to pieces that have a millesimal fineness of .925, the acid tests do not provide a silver grading reading and only provides a positive or negative result for silver content in a piece. Most sellers get this confused and list items as Sterling silver if acid tested positive for silver. This is incorrect! A positive silver result also does not guarantee a piece is solid silver, the item may be plated, however this is easier to determine with silver than gold if the seller has dealt with silver on a regular basis. If unsure always asks questions.All acid tests performed, where a positive silver reading has been detected will be listed as genuine silver, personally I can detect where there is more silver in a piece then another however I do not feel it is correct for me to label any piece by silver grading without the applicable hallmarks.
How does acid testing work for genuine Gold? Acid testing genuine gold can be trickier to test then silver due to a number of factors, which includes but is not limited to:- The acid tests for gold testing are not always accurate and a lot off guess work may be involved- Positive gold acid tests will only determine if there is gold content in a piece and does not determine if the piece is solid gold, gold filled, rolled gold or gold plated. It is extremely important you as the buyer know this as many sellers tend to not share this information unless asked.- The only way to test if a piece is solid gold using acid tests is to damage the piece by filing deeply into each item, this is not something I am willing to do- I personally do not feel confident in the gold acid test results so am reluctant to state a piece is gold filled, rolled gold, solid gold or Gold plated unless I have purchased it as such or is Hallmarked.
