Country/Region of Manufacture: United Kingdom |
- an early version made in England by A.G.Thornton Ltd., scales are reverse-painted on clear laminate that is pinned to mahogany wood. A large impressive slide rule, the body of the rule is about 3.75 x 17.5 inches, slide is just over 19 inches in length. Some signs of age and use, but overall very good condition. Box has one dented corner. Photos are of the actual item for sale.
The de...velopers of this slide rule, Admiralty Research Laboratory (1921-1977), conducted secret scientific research in support of the Royal Navy.
In general, objects can, in varying degrees of course, reflect and transmit electromagnetic radiation (radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, light waves, ultraviolet waves, etc.) This slide rule has nothing to do with reflection or transmission of radiation, however, objects also emit thermal electromagnetic radiation, the intensity and spectrum of emissions varying according to a complex quantum mechanical function of the object's temperature. The ideal "black body" does not reflect or transmit radiation, and so "Black Body Radiation" is just the component of an object's radiation due to the object's temperature. The closely related term "Color Temperature" refers to the visible spectrum of an object's Black Body Radiation at the given temperature. -rja
An early application of the Black Body Radiation slide rule would have been in the development of devices to detect objects by their emissions at infrared wavelengths. With this slide rule, for example, it is possible to estimate, for an object at a given temperature, the photonic energy emitted by the object within a specified range of infrared wavelengths.
Calculations of Black Body Radiation are useful in various scientific. industrial, and engineering applications, including the disciplines of Pyrometry, Thermography, Cosmology.
Rule is marked

Under the slide the body is marked "A.G.Thornton Ltd." and "Made in England"
