Original Description:
1870's CDV Photograph Civil War Confederate General Alfred J. Vaughan, Jr., Indian Agent to Blackfoot Tribe Vaughan Wears Traditional Native American Clothing & Ornate Horned Bonnet Headdress of the Blackfoot ConfederacyAlfred Jefferson Vaughan Jr. (1830 – 1899) was a Confederate general during the Civil War, in which he was wounded twice, and fought mainly in the Western Theater of the conflict.
Immediately prior to his involvement in the Civil War, ...A.J. Vaughan served as an Indian Agent for the Upper Missouri tribes, including the Blackfoot Confederacy from the period of 1855-1861.
In the 19th century, an Indian agent was a man authorized to interact with Native American and First Nations tribes on behalf of the United States government. Some of his main jobs were working towards preventing conflicts between settlers and Indians and maintaining cooperation with U.S. Army military personnel.
This CDV portrait, dating to the 1870s and following his period as an Indian Agent and Army General, shows Vaughan wearing traditional Blackfoot tribal clothing, including an ornate horned bonnet headdress. Around his neck is a necklace made of grizzly bear claws, an honorary piece of jewelry bestowed upon the tribe's distinguished men of bravery.
Most portraits of Vaughan show him with a goatee; he is photographed here wearing spectacles and is clean shaven (probably in his 40's). Reverse side of the CDV features a handwritten caption: "Col. A.J. Vaughn, Indian Agt. for Blackfoot Indians for fifteen years, aged 70 years." Vaughan died at age 69, so the photo was likely captioned around the turn of the century, following his death.
