Dubuque, IA- Dubuque Central Improvement Company $1 Dec. 28, 1857
The company was formed in 1857 to develop and improve parcels of land it owned. The firm was short lived, failing in 1858. Wellstood Hay &... Whiting printed this series of notes, with the $1 featuring vignettes of Minerva and a sword-wielding maiden seated next to a large silver dollar. The silver dollar reverse (with rays behind the eagle) shown was never used on the dollar and suggests that the vignette was originally done around 1853 when the half dollar used such a design. A large red "ONE" protector completes the design. A list of the stockholders appears on the back. The note grades Very Fine 30 By PMG with a note of "Previously Mounted".
