Butter dishes were a popular itemin the Victorian household. Patterns on butter were popular and round or squarepounds of butter were made with patterns on the top. When served, the patternlent an extra elegance to the table. We are offering for your consideration a rareand antique, square shaped Butter Dish manufactured by James Tufts in the 1870’s.The firm was located in Boston, Massachusetts from 1875 to 1915, when it closed. It is notedthe piece is, “quadruple plate�...� and bears anearly pattern number, “1944.” This unique piece measures 7.50 inches high and 9.25inches from handle to handle. The extra high domed cover of this stunningbutter dish is elegantly decorated on all four sides with an etched floral andleaf design in a medallion that is framed by a band etched in a geometricdesign A beaded design decorates the edges and a beaded open work handle providesfor ease in carrying and lifting. The bottom piece has a striking sunburstdesign in a medallion on all four sides and a beaded bottom rim. Two large andopen scrolled handles add a handsome appeal to the piece. Four ribbed feetcomplete the butter dish and allows it to be lifted off from the tablepreventing moisture marks if ice is used. Two knife holders are attached to theback ready to hold your favorite butter knife. A square, silver plated insert witha round hole in the middle provides for drainage if ice is used. A nice blockof cheese and a sardine can could also be used inside the butter dish. Thepiece is in VERY GOOD ESTATE CONDITION.There is wear on the cover but nothing that wouldnot be considered age appropriate for its age. The inside is clean with no rustor pits.
