Autographed 5" x 7" Bolshoi photograph as Lisa in "Pikova Dama". Galina Vishnevskaya (1926-2012)Russian sopranoThe soprano initially sung forher pleasure and during World War II sung with a jazz band in militaryconcerts. From 1943-1944 she studied atthe Rimsky-Korsakov Music School in Leningrad with Ivan Did-Zurabov. She washired as a chorister in 1944 by the Leningrad Regional Operetta Theater. She proved excellent and soon was singing soloroles.. When the N...ovogord Philharmonic opened, she was one of their firstsoloists. As of 1947 she sung was oftena soloist with the Leningrad Philharmonic. In 1951 she began to take voicelessons from soprano Vera Garina in Leningrad, alternating opera with popularmusic.In 1952, she competedfor a place in the Bolshoi trainee class and was accepted despite not havingconservatory training. (Vishnevskaya finallyenrolled at the Moscow Conservatory whilst singing at the Bolshoi andinternationally and graduated in 1966.) Shespent the next 26 years there as a leading soprano and also had a majorinternational career as of 1955 on the opera stages of the world, quite unusualfor a Soviet singer at the time.She met MstislavRostropovich in 1955 and they were married four days later. He would become herpianist in concert and often conducted her concerts with orchestra. She remained at the Bolshoi until 1974 whenthey left the Soviet Union as dissidents. In 1978 the Soviet government pulled their passports. They did not return to Russia until after thechange to a constitutional government.After 1974 herinternational opera and concert career continued with appearances at the MET, Covent Garden, La Scala and the Paris Opera among others generally at thispoint in non-Russian roles. Herperformances as Aida were prized by vocal enthusiasts.She left and extensiverecorded legacy.
