An Antique Early Victorian French Fan dated to around 1850 - Signed EP and Showing "Queen Victoria and Her Family"
Description This fan is French in origin, but was obviously made for the English market, as it shows Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their first 6 children - albeit in a stylised medieval setting, which was typical for the Romantic Era. The fan is made of carved and gilded cattlebone stic...ks and a double paper leaf. The front leaf shows a handcoloured lithograph of the Royal Family in the grounds of a rather medieval looking castle. The leaf bears the initials of the engraver EP (the E inverted, as always with this engraver's signature). I was told that his engraver is most likely Spanish and was working for French fan manufacturers. He was responsible for a great number of lithograph fans in the 1850s and 1860s, some of them very beautiful and elaborate. The reverse is handpainted with a landscape scene.
The fan measures approx. 10.75" long and 20" wide at its widest point. The measurements for this fan in centimeters are approx. 27 cm long and 51 cm wide.
The fan is in good condition with minor flaws. The most significant are a repair on the shoulder of each guardstick (see last photos). The repairs may not look very sturdy, but they are (I stress-tested them to be sure). There is minor wear to the leaf edge and a few small flaws on the front leaf on the far right and left sides (see photos). The tassel is somewhat worn.
Postage Packaging and postage VIA REGISTERED AND TRACKED AIRMAIL to the UK will cost £12.10, within Europe via Airmail £12.50 (14.50 Euro), overseas via Airmail £13.30 (ca. US$17.70).
