Original Description:
This bug has been relisted twice for winning bidders not following thru ................... I will not entertain first time bidders. Do us both a favor and check the shipping cost prior to bidding as they have been out of control for a number of reasons. I have lowered the price to help with the shipping cost for the successful bidder.
This beetle was my sons first car over 25 years ago, it became a project car for my grandson and I and would become his first car when he turne...d 16. That was over 2 1/2 years ago .................. so the project started as a frame off task in the summer of 2017 when my grandson was 12. We worked on it every summer and did all the work together, it is not a show winner by any means as it was all about the journey. I gave the car to my grandson on his 16th birthday and now that he is starting college at ASU in the fall and the bug does not have heat or a/c, he needs the money to pay for school.
The bug body is a 1968, the chassis and pan are from my 1966 bug. The interior and running gear is also from the 66', all redone as shown in the photo's. The pan was so bad on the 68 that in the end it was quicker to swap out the chassis with my 66 which had no rust issues to meet the 16th birthday timeline. The transaxle and engine from the 66 was also used in the interest of time. The bug had different tires and wheels which proved to be too nice as someone tried to steal them in the first week at High School in Texas. We had to replace the tires and rims along with the driver side rear fender and rear brake drum as the wheel came off coming out of the school parking lot.
I have the 68 transaxle and 1641cc long-block (rebuilt 25 years ago, less then 500 miles on the long-block) that will go with the car. The 66 engine i(1500 cc) in the car runs great, but the transaxle seal seems to be leaking and making a little noise, as the car hit the deck when the wheel came off. The interior is in great shape, new headliner, window rubbers, low back seats and rear seat redone from the 66, new carpet and coco mats, Empi short shifter and wood wheel installed. Front end rebuilt with disc brakes installed, the wheels and rims are brand new, maybe 50 miles on them. The original radio is installed but not hooked up.
The paint and body work was done with the help of my grandson, my brother and myself. We used House of Colors Brandywine, looks great overall, but a few runs and scratches can be found. We de-chromed the bug and removed the 68 padded dash and seats, installed one-piece windows and the very popular pop out rear windows.
The heater channels were rusted badly and should have been replaced, but time and skills forced us to take a short cut and used rust repair, metal repair and bondo (poor decision), but a promise was made to give my grandson that his car would be ready when he turned 16 and that was far more important to me to keep my promise and my word!!
The beetle has history within the family .............. but money for college is more important at this time. The car is still a project car, as the heater channels need replacing, not critical and not a major task to cut out and replace, but a big task for sure. There is an issue with the transaxle, again doesn't appear to be a big deal, but it does leak fluid, and I have run out of energy.
I have tried to be as honest as possible, I love beetles, it is a great first car, or a great car to finish for that beetle guy with a passion for the air cooled mechanics that is looking for the major body work and interior work already done.
Car is being "Sold As-Is and Where Is"  ................. Buyer responsible for shipping, seller is available to assist with pick-up and shipping as required.
