This is a rare July 23rd, 1928 souvenir program from the Original Broadway production of the classic JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II musical comedy "SHOW BOAT" which played the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City. (The production opened December 27th, 1927 and ran for 575 performances.) ..... This masterwork by JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II remains one of the greatest of all musicals and possibly the greatest musical thea...tre score to date. The story starts in the 1880's on one of the many American riverboats that featured traveling shows. The musical starred HELEN MORGAN as "Julie", CHARLES WINNINGER as "Cap'n Andy", NORMA TERRIS as "Magnolia", AUNT JEMIMA as "Queenie", EDNA MAY OLIVER as "Parthy Ann Hawks", SAMMY WHITE as "Frank", EVA PUCK as "Ellie", HOWARD MARSH as "Gaylord Ravenal" and JULES BLEDSOE as "Joe" and included ALLAN CAMPBELL, CHARLES ELLIS, BERT CHAPMAN, FRANCIS X. MAHONEY, THOMAS GUNN, JACK WYNN, PHIL SHERIDAN, JACK DALEY, DOROTHY DENESE, ANNIE HART, ESTELLE FLOYD, ANNIE HART, MILDRED SCHWENKE, ROBERT FARIEY, TED DANIELS, J. LEWIS JOHNSON, TANA KAMP, DAGMAR OAKLAND, MAURINE HOLMES and LAURA CLAIRON ..... DETAILS: The oversized 28 page program measures 8 7/8" X 11 7/8" inches and includes MARILYN MILLER on the front cover. As was customary for producer FLORENZ ZIEGFELD, the program is full of advertising and promotional text for the other shows he was producing on Broadway including MARILYN MILLER and JACK DONAHUE in "Rosalie" which featured a GEORGE GERSHWIN score and DENNIS KING and VIVIENNE SEGAL in the musical "The Three Musketeers". There are also photos of FLORENZ ZIEGFELD, his wife BILLIE BURKE and several former "FOLLIES" girls. The program includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes and the list of musical numbers for "SHOW BOAT" and wonderful advertising. Among the advertisements is a full page Lucky Strike Cigarettes ad featuring Ziegfeld's endorsement (last scanned image) ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a small amount of paper loss in the outside margin of two pages as a result of a printing error (no loss of text), this rare program is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
