First edition of duMaurier's masterpiece which was later made into the Oscar-winning 1940 filmdirected by Alfred Hitchcock. A nice example. From the first chapter: "Lastnight I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the irongate leading to the drive and for a while I could not enter, for the way wasbarred to me". These famous openinglines later became one of the most famous opening words ever recorded in AlfredHitchcock's Oscar-winning 1940 film of the same name. Rebecca is certainly DuMaurier's most famous novel and one that many others after her attempted toimitate, as a resurgence of romantic mystery novels came soon after itspublication. The Mystery Writers of America have named Rebecca among the topten Mystery Novels of All Time.446pp.Approximately 8 inchestall. ConditionReportExternallySpine – good condition – gilt titles, bruised top and tail, there is a small white mark just below the title.Joints – good condition – very gently rubbed. Corners – good condition – very gently bumped and worn.Boards – good condition – original cloth boards, gilt title across the top left hand corner.Page edges – good condition – all very lightly tanned with some foxing.See above and photos.InternallyHinges – good condition – intact.Paste downs – good condition – plain, the rear paste down has a small W. H. Smith and Son label in the bottom left hand corner.End papers – good condition – plain, remains of a pencil written hand written message in the top right hand corner of the front end paper, the rear end paper has some offsetting from the WH Smiths label.Title – good condition – lightly tanned with minor foxing.Pages – good condition – half title present, lightly tanned throughout with very minor foxing.Binding – good condition.
