This fabulous "Winsor & Newton Ltd." watercolour box dates from, I believe, pre 1882.1832 William Winsor, a chemist, and Henry Newton, an artist, established their partnership at 38 Rathbone Place, London. This was Henry's home, which was then part of an artists' quarters. By 1835 they had developed the first moist water colours utilising the moisture-retaining properties of glycerine. The new water colour pans were much simpler and more convenient to use than water colour cakes and q...uickly earned well-deserved popularity.The box is made of mahogany with drawer to the base and brass fittings, the pin that holds the drawer in place is present, unfortunately, the key is missing.The box itself has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina over the years, however, it does have the usual scuffs, scratches and marks you would expect from the years of use.The hinges have been replaced and consequently, the lid doesn't sit flat on top of the box.The box interior its' original lift out tray with paint divisions for 18 paint cakes, compartments for brushes, mixing bowl, palette, etc. The brush and mixing bowl compartment still have their labels to the bottoms.The paints are not original to the box and the mixing bowl is a replacement. There are also seven "Draughtmen's" colour sticks. The drawer slides in and out well, it has its' original campaign style handle.The underside of the lid has its' original trade label, this has retained a good colour.There is also a retailers label for "C. N. Beere of Melbourne" on the lid, this has been a well travelled box! I have tried to show the condition in the photographs.The box measures 23 cm (9 inches) long, 20 cm (8 inches) wide.
