About this Listing:This listing is for a very rare Intel 3101 memory chip. This 3101 is a C3101. The 3101 has 16 gold leads, gold cap, and is in a white ceramic body. The Intel 3101 was the world’s first solid-state memory chip. Before the 3101, computer memory was primar...ily based on a technology called Core Memory. Core Memory consisted of wire matrices with tiny iron doughnuts that could be magnetized to represent ones and zeros. Instead of the bulky cores, the 3101 used microscopic semiconductor transistors built on a silicon wafer. The 3101 chip brought greater speed, less maintenance, less bulk, and less heat to computers. The Intel 3101 was also Intel’s first product. Other Silicon Valley companies were making logic chips. Intel decided to go another direction and focused on developing solid-state computer memory. Intel was successful with several different memory products before moving on to the microprocessor.
Intel selected two different transistor technologies to explore for its memory products. The first project group, using bipolar junction transistor technology, was working on the Intel 3101. Using PMOS (P-Channel Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) transistors, the second project group was working on the Intel 1101. The two groups were competing to get their respective product completed first. The bipolar group narrowly won, and the 3101 became Intel’s first product. The PMOS group completed their work, and the 1101 became an even greater commercial success than the 3101.
The Intel 3101 is a 64-bit Schottky Bipolar SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) chip. The 3101 was organized as 16 rows of 4-bit words with an access time of 50 nanoseconds. The 3101 was created in 1968 and preceded the 4004 microprocessor. In fact, Intel’s original success was in computer memory and not microprocessors.
