In 1992, the International Olympic Committee launched its first coin program in cooperation with five national mints from around the world: the Royal Canadian Mint, Monnaie de Paris, Munze Osterreich (Austrian National Mint, ) the National Mint of Greece, and the Royal Australian Mint.
All coins - both silver and gold - were struck to a common purity: .9999
The program was designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games, 1896 - 1996.
The coin you see ...here is a proof of the 1/2 oz Royal Canadian Mint gold coin, the first of three gold coins. The imperfections you see are in the plastic holder that contains the coin.
These commemorative coins were struck with a meaningful face value at the time - this one has a face value of $175 Canadian. So you get the best of both worlds: the bullion value and the currency value underlying the bullion value.
The image represents the universal appeal of the Olympic Games, and of course, being Canada, the bust is a classic of Queen Elizabeth.
All in all, a marvelous coin to own.
