Georgian Era (c1714 -c1837)Georgian era gold alloys were 18 karat and higher. Each sumptuous jewellery creation was completely handcrafted. Prior to 1750, and the invention of the rolling mill, apprentices had the task of hand-hammering blocks of gold down to the desired thickness which the master goldsmith could then transform into jewelry. The invention of the rolling mill to roll out uniform sheets of silver and gold streamlined this process and saved a great deal of labour. During the early Georgian period, diamonds were the most desirable stone, but colored stones, such as emeralds, rubies, and sapphires, were later brought back into popular fashion. Jewelers experimented with new gem cuts, the most popular being rose cut and table cut. One way to determine if a jewelry item is Georgian is by the mount: stones set in Georgian pieces often had enclosed backs and were set over a foil.Jewelers created all Georgian jewelry by hand. To keep up with the rising demand for jewelry, reproduced copies of gemstones and gold substitutes.LOVE TOKEN - Motifs used in love tokens included cupids, doves, the ‘altar of love’, butterflies, romantic messages, initials and names. Symbolic bird jewellery usually features Swallows or Doves. Swallow Birds were a very romantic symbol in antique jewellery, representing faithfulness and wanting your loved one to return home safely. Doves are often shown with the word pax, (the Latin word for peace) holding an olive branch in their beak. These doves symbolize peace, friendship and the bringing of hope. The French “Saint Esprit” or Holy Spirit dove is depicted to be descending from heaven to earth with wings spread. This is a symbol of faith and was meant to bring luck to the wearer.
