For consideration is an antique (c. 1870) oil painting on canvas, signed “M Reynold.”The painting depicts a subdued winter scene where cows are being lead down a snowy path by a farmer or farmhand. While two cows lag behind, it would appear that the middle cow and calf are looking straight forward, giving the impression that they’re returning the viewer’s gaze.While I was unable to find any significant information about the artist, it’s clear that their point of view is infor...med by Impressionism. And though they may not have been a professionally-known painter, one could imply that they were, at a minimum, a rather skilled amateur.The condition of the painting is very good. There’s clearly some soiling that has occurred over the years. The actual color is closest to the first photo. For a few photos, I changed to white light, which depicts the painting much whiter than it actually is.The canvas is slightly slack in the stretchers and there’s a fair amount of dust in the back of the painting.The gilted frame is in very good condition with minor repairs to its intricate decoration.The canvas on its stretchers measures about 14” by 20”.
