This is a very nice all-original M1 Garand bayonet called the M5, developed post-WW2 and accepted by the U.S. Military in 1953 for the Korean War. The M5 bayonet served thru the Korean War into the 1960's and fits only the U.S. M1 Garand rifle. Unlike previous models that used a barrel band for attachment to the rifle in addition to the bayonet lug, the M5 attaches to the rifle with a stud on the crossguard that inserts into the gas tube plug. This particular example ...was made by J&D Tool Co. and comes complete with an original M8A1 scabbard made by the V.P. Co. (Victory Plastics). This M5 appears to have been issued and combat-used but is in good condition overall. The original factory parkerized finish looks good and rates 85 to 90%, with the majority of the finish wear on the blade (much of it from scabbard-wear). The 6.75" inch blade still has what appears to be the factory edge and does not show any signs of re-sharpening. There are no chips in the cutting edge and the original point is still intact and sharp. The face of the steel crossguard is maker marked with "J.D. Tool Co." and "U.S. M5". The checkered black plastic grips are in great shape, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major wear/damage. Both sides are nice and tight to the tang. All of the rifle attachment hardware is in excellent shape and in perfect working order. The bayonet that comes with this M5 is also in great all-original condition. All of the metal parts including the rivets are still intact and in good shape. The scabbard body is free from any cracks or repairs, and the original o.d. green paint is in very good condition. The green web material that makes the hanger is in excellent condition overall, free from any stains, tears, or repairs, and the original stitching is 100% intact and tight.
