(1910-1969) was a trapeze performer and owner of the Flying Valentines flying trapeze act, popular in shows and circuses of the 1940's.
Fred Valentine learned the fly-traps at age 17 from his older brother, George, when George Valentine was with Paul Sullivan's "Flying Sullivans" during the 1920's. Subseqently, Fred and four other brothers formed their own flying act; then in 1932 he went on his own. He performed the act into his 50's.
A 1941 news clipping describes the act as one of the "leading flying acts of the American amusement world, " and that the troupe consisted of "three people, a girl trapeze artist, a straight man on the horizontal bars, and a clown. The routines offered in this act consist of pirouettes, somersaults, single and double flying catches and leaps, with a unique variation of the traditional bar leap into the net for the finish."The Flying Valentines were stand-ins for Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida, the stars of the 1956 film "Trapeze", and the troupe helped to promote the film when it was released.Pieces date from 1929 - 1969 but are mostly from the 1940's and '50's. Many of the photos have been inscribed and dedicated to Freddie Valentine, some written on reverse side.RPPC postcard of Major Mite, midget performerSigned, inscribed 4”x5” photo of “Zeek” Bozo LaMont, clown actSigned, inscribed 5”x7” photo of The 2 Erwingos, swing actSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of the Gaudsmith Bros. dog act, 1946Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo of the Flying Behees, signed by Rose BeheeSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Dan Dorsey, wire performer, 1953Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Egle Zacchini, “Miss Victory”, WWII cannon act, c1940’sSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Kay Frances Hanneford, bareback rider, c1940’sSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Blondin Rellin, cycling act, 1947Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Eddie Knipschield, trapeze actSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Bob ParrySigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Bob Hermines MidgetsSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Sol Solomon, trapeze actSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Zenka Malikova, high wire performer, 1953Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Selden, the Stratosphere ManSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Slivers Johnson and his “Black Dot Taxi”, clown, 1952Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Frank and Vicki Layton, Layton Dog ActSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of The Antaleks group, 1944Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo from Helen Billeti(?) and her highwire troupeSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Pat and Ann Barrett, high wire actSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Pat and Ann Barrett, high wire actSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of The Saber Jets, high wire act, circa 1950’sSigned, inscribed 8”x10” publicity photo of Chester “Bobo” Barnett, clown, 1959Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Chester “Bobo” Barnett, clown, 1959Signed, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Ted Allen, World’s Champion Horseshoe PitcherSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of girl posing on a crescent moon, Giole(?), c1940’sSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Tom Landau, performer in western gear, c1950’sSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of George Lerd(?), high wire actSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Ed Roecben(?), in tuxedo, magician(?), c1940’sSigned, inscribed 8”x10” photo of Sal Emmett(?), in tuxedo, magician(?), 1969Hand-captioned 8”x10” photo of Fred Valentine performing with the Flying Sullivans, 19298”x10” photo of Fred Valentine and the crew setting up netting with Barnes Bros.
