History: Mississipp...ian Culture were the last mound building cultures. Culture covered the Midwestern & Southeastern North American region. Due to the quality of this hand carved Hematite /slate pipe. It would have been used for burial or ceremonial rituals, & associated with the elite. Mound builders had extensive trading routes between each of the connecting cultures, most were connected by waterways/rivers. Tennessee, Ohio & the Mississippi Rivers. During my research, I came up with a possible timeline when the Cahokia culture was at its climax. Also called “southern cult” between 1250-1350. When symbolic ceremonies became a major part in the culture with the appearance of statues, stone etchings, ground stone ceremonial implements. The falcon was considered the most important symbol in the Cahokian culture. Many artifacts depict the Birdman, Falcon Dancer & Falcon Warriors.
Personal History: I am 76 years old, I grew up on the Tennessee River & near the Buffalo & Duck Rivers. There was strong presence of Mississippian Culture in this area. This particular pipe came from the Ramey Family Collection. My father was born in 1884 in Lyon Co.KY. My father worked and hunted from TN, KY & into southern IL. One of my ancestors included Thomas Ramey who once owned the land where the Cahokia Mounds are. The family that I could ask about where this pipe was found are long since deceased. I was fortunate to have received family found artifacts along with what I found as child. To enable me to present some very special museum quality artifacts.
I have reduced the price, I need to liquidate the remaining items from my collection. I will consider reasonable offers. It would a special piece any anyone’s collection!
