This finely carved shamanic medicine figure from the Benua Dayak culture of Borneo was field collected on the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan in the 1990's.
The figure was originally used as a stopper to seal a wooden container or bamboo tube, which contained the shaman's tools and medicines.
The figure acquired a fine patina during its lifetime. There is a bit of loss to the right shoulder, but this area shows deep patination, indicating that the loss occurred long before... the figure ceased to be used.
