One of a kind wonderful Chinesesculpture of a mother and her son.Made in Guangzhou, China.Circa 1980s.The sculpture features amother ready to tattoo a phrase on the back of her son.Beautiful glaze withbeige crackles on the figurine’s robes and the old lady’s hair. The faces, thebody and the hands are left unglazed.The wonderful mother andson sculpture were very well known Chinese historical figures: General Yue Fei(岳飞) and his mother.General Yue was a realperson from the 12th c...entury. He grew up in poverty and his motherwas responsible for educating him. She was known to have taught her son how towrite by writing in the sand as she could not afford pen and paper.The mother wanted tomake sure Yue would be loyal to the country thus tattooed four Chinesecharacters on his back: 精忠报国 (roughly translated as Repayyour country by being loyal).General Yue eventually became a great general but was accused oftreason by his enemies. He died when he was 39 years old.Every Chinese knew about this story. It represented love for thecountry and filial piety. This is aninteresting sculpture with a lovely story behind it.Stamp of maker on the base. Excellent condition.Measurement: 16.5 cm (L) x 11 cm (W) x 21.5 cm (H)
