Up for sale is this very rare, vintage Urei / Universal Audio LA-5 Compressor / Limiter in good condition. Sounds amazing! Much more useful than the LA-4, closer to an LA-3A. Serial #233, only a few hundred of these were made! Originally, these were meant to be limiters at 20:1 ratio, however, this one was modded with a 5-way stepped-switch on the side that allows you to access 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, and 20:1 ratios for more controlled compression! Very useful with this mod. Also h...as the XLR pigtail connectors installed for easy connection. Cosmetically, it isn't in the best condition, but sonically, it sounds incredible, producing a fat compression that slams if you want at 20:1 ratio setting, or lighten up & smoothen the compression by bringing down the new mod for ratio selection and using the threshold knob to taste. The only reason we are selling this one is because we already have another pair of LA-5's at the studio and don't need a third sitting around, as we would like try another piece of gear to replace this one. The only issue that is an easy workaround, is that the when the meter selector is switched to "GR" mode, the needle isn't lined up to the "0" - however, the meter works fine in "output" mode. This may just need the needle to be calibrated - none of this actually affects the sound, just how you read the meter (we just used our ears to taste). Would love for this one to go to a good home :)
