Here on offer is a rare antique Victorianneedlepoint foot stool & cuspidor or spittoon, dating to c1860. The golden age of cuspidors wasbetween 1840 and 1918, although they were in use in Asia for centuries. It wasthe deadly 1918 flu epidemic that bought about their demise. They were made inmany different forms in many different materials This example dates to around 1860and would have been made for the home of a wealthy woman who would have beenill with something like co...nsumption. This is a rare example of aspittoon or cuspidor hidden inside a foot stool. The foot stool has a chamferedrectangular shape that sits on four cream ceramic bun feet. The sides have a prettyinlaid border towards the bottom. The hinged lid is upholstered with a spring floralbouquet in needlepoint. There is a small area of damage on one corner. Thefootstool has a hole in the base to push the spittoon out of the casing. Theunderside of the lid is fitted with a turned finial to hold the spittoon securelyin position. Once opened, the stool retainsthe original brown glazed cuspidor. The ceramic and the iridescent brown glazeare in excellent condition.
The cuspidor is being offered ingood antique condition, it measures about 30cm by 25cm by 21cm. A very rare opportunity to own sucha collectable piece.
