Reference Number: Avaluer:67540854
Original Description:
This coin was issued in Saurashtra Janapada in western India in 150-50 BC.  It is a Sri Vatsa Type.   Hard to get coin.  There are faint designs on reverse side.
Surashtra Janapada was located in modern Saurashtra in the state of Gujarat.  It is mentioned in both the Ramayana and Mahabharata,   Indeed, the city of Dwarka, where Lord Krishna ruled, is in northern Saurashtra, although the Surashtra Janapada may have been located... only in the southern part of the peninsula. Most Surashtra coins are found in the south, in Junagadh district.  Surashtra was absorbed into the Mauryan empire by Chandragupta Maurya. Most coins from Surashtra are approximately 1 gm, in weight.  Rajgor believes they are therefor quarter karshapanas of 8 rattis, or 0.93 gm.  Mashakas of 3 rattis and double mashakas of 4 rattis are also known.  The coins appear to uniface, in that there is single die-struck symbol on one side.  However, most of the coins appear to be overstruck  over other Surashtra coins and thus there is often the remnant of a previoussymbol on the reverse, as well as sometimes under the obverse symbol as well.[The above explanations are quoted from "COININDIA, The Virtual Museum of Indian Coins".]
On Zeno-125118, Mr. "ANCIENTINDIANCOINS" commented in Zeno-List, listed below.    "There still is great disagreement concerning the chronology of this series: Rajgor dates them ca. 450-300 BC,  Mitchiner had dated the series      from ca. 310-260 BC; Tye placed it between 2nd to late 1st century BC; van't Haaf sees one long running series from 450-50 BC.  By now      favouring a time span from about 130 BC until the beginning of the 1st century AD  Mitchiner meanwhile approaches closest to the view of     Robert Tye."
I will attach a share free historical map of "Mahajanapadas and Janapadas (c. 500 BCE)".Junagadh district is located around (21.5205, 70.4487) in google location system.  I will attach some photos of the region from google map system.
