Chinese Qing Dynasty 19thCentury Zhong Li Quan Hand Carved Painted Bamboo Figure Outstanding hand carvedbamboo figure of Zhong Li Quan from the send half of the 19thcentury. Zhong Li Quan is one of the Eight Immortal, leader of the Ba Xian andone of the most ancient Immortals. He is usually depicted as a bald, corpulentman with a bare belly and holding a feather fan and/or fan made of horse hair.He uses the fans to resurrect the dead, turn stones into gold or silver and toalleviat...e hunger and poverty. This figure is carvedfrom bamboo. It depicts Zhong Li Quan standing in a long robe with bare chestand belly. In his left hand is a feather fan. In his right hand is a horse hairfan. His face is depicted as somewhat grotesque but with features that wouldindicate that he was divine. The figure has much remaining paint including agold robe, red belly and chest and black hair and eyes. Nice detailed carving. Basedon the style I think this figure dates more in the mid-19th century.A rare and outstanding figure. The figure is in goodcondition for its age and use. The paint has faded and the figure shows wear onthe body. The base has worn nearly smooth from being moved over the last 150 orso years. This is a trulyexceptional figure in the detail and in the fact that it is carved from bamboo. Dimensions: Height 9 7/8 inches (25cm), Depth 4 inches (10 cm), Width 5 1/8 inches (12.8 cm).
