This is a wonderful, rare solid silver cigarette case made during the Art Deco period. Curved in form, it has a distinctive engine turned finish throughout. The top has a black and red enamelled image in the shape of a skyscraper, a superb and typical example of this popular period of design. A vacant cartouche means that the lucky purchaser could personalise the case should they so wish. It is made from a good gauge of silver and feels tactile to hold. Condition is superb. There a...re no splits, dents or repairs, just the usual light surface marks which are commensurate with a piece of silver which is 84 years old.The case comes together with a snap shut closing action and the release catch works perfectly. Once closed there are no gaps. The original retaining straps are still in place which is rare to see as they usually lose their elasticity over time and are discarded. There are a couple of small areas of tarnishing but they could be removed with a good clean. The case is rare and very desirable, complimenting any collection. My photographs confirm condition, however further images are available if required. Hallmarks are crisp, showing Birmingham 1935, the makers being Joseph Gloster. Established in 1880, the business operated from premises known as Lion Silver Works, Hockney Hill, Birmingham. They were popular manufacturers of a wide range of silver and plated goods. By 1914, they employed in excess of 100 workers at their factory where they traded through to the late 1970's.The quality of their work is reflected in this wonderful, rare case. The case measures 8.3cm x 6cm and weighs 54g.Many thanks for looking and good luck with your bidding. I will be listing more silver items from my private collection over the coming weeks and hopefully there will be something of interest to you. Please note that I am unable to accept bidding from customers in China.
