The chair, an icon of 20th-century design, is celebrated for itslean profile, clean lines and meticulous attention to detail. About the Designer: LudwigMies van der Rohe; March 27, 1886 – August 17, 1969) was a German Americanarchitect. He was commonly referred toas Mies, his surname. Along with Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius andFrank Lloyd Wright, he is regarded as one of the pioneers of modernistarchitecture. Mies was a director of theBauhaus, a seminal school in modern architecture. After Nazism's rise to power, and with itsstrong opposition to modernism (leading to the closing of the Bauhaus itself), Mies went to the United States. He accepted the position to head thearchitecture school at the Armour Institute of Technology (now the IllinoisInstitute of Technology), in Chicago.
