‘My Garden’ pattern - Excellent conditionThis is one of 2 different Trios from the Wileman and Shelley eras I am offering this week.
This Shelley Trio is a very pretty example of that company’s fine bone china in the ever sought after 'Queen Anne' shape, delightfully decorated with the very finely detailed 'My Garden' pattern, and is still in excellent condition.HistoryThe 'Queen Anne' shape, registered in 192...6 (Rd.No. 723404), was an evolution from earlier Wileman and Foley shapes and was to prove one the most popular of all the Shelley shapes. The Queen Anne design was based on an earlier Foley shape called ‘Antique’ which had been produced from 1905 to 1914. The Foley 'Antique' shape was based on an even earlier shape, one which was called 'Square Queen Anne', which had been introduced in the Wileman era in 1884.The 'Queen Anne' shape, therefore, is one which features throughout the whole of the Wileman / Foley / Shelley dynasty from 1894 to 1966.Description:Susan Hill, on page 35 of her book “The Shelley Style”, dates this pattern number 11607 ‘My Garden’ as September 1928 and describes it as:“Hollyhocks and small roses with green grass under, on small panel only; pattern has addition of sundial on plate; pattern in centre of saucer and plate. Printed in black and enamelled in blue, pink, yellow and green; blue edge and handle”.On the following page (36) there is a photograph of a ‘Queen Anne’ trio in this ‘My Garden’ pattern..In Sheryl Burdess’s valuable reference book “Shelley – Teaware Patterns”, pattern number 11607 is illustrated on page 151 and described there as:“Black print. Garden with flowers that include hollyhocks and roses. Sundial on plate. Enamelled in blue, pink, yellow and green. Pattern outside cup, centre of saucer and plate. Saucer and plate have border of pale grey trees. Yellow band on saucer and plate below border. White ground. Blue edges and handle. Entered in pattern book during nor after 1928”.Condition:This Trio really has been extremely well looked after. I have provided large photographs of the Trio ‘all-the-way-round’ to help you view its condition and the ‘Supersize’ facility on the Listing will enable you to view the pieces in high magnification. All 3 pieces carry the 1925-1940 Shelley 'England' Backstamp together with the 'Queen Anne' Shape No.723404 and, handwritten, the Pattern No.11607. In addition, there is a ‘Lawleys of Regent Street’ stamp for whom the pieces were clearly made. There are no chips, cracks, or any signs of restoration either to be seen, or felt, on any of the 3 pieces. There is no wear to the very pretty pattern decoration or to the enamelling anywhere; it really is an excellent trio. All 3 pieces ‘ping’ like the proverbial bell. The surface of the inside of the cup is still a gleaming white but, when viewed with magnification, there is the often seen very feint crazing and a slight darkening of the under glaze at the bottom. This feint crazing can also be seen on the outside of the cup but only with the magnification; to plain sight the cup looks perfect. There are few cutlery lines anywhere suggesting the trio has been little used and hardly any firing marks.Dimensions:Cup:4.25 inches (Handle to rim) & 2.5 inches tall; Saucer 5.25inches; Plate 6 inches (diagonal) and 5.5 inches across All in all, these are 3 really lovely pieces of this highly collectable Shelley China, in extremely well preserved condition, which would grace anyone’s collection – but if you find you are disappointed with the trio’s condition you may just return it for a full refund.
